If you’re a big fan of wedding blogs and Pinterest (like I am), then we’ve ALLLLL seen those faaaabulous sparkler photographs doing the rounds…
The ones where it seems like all of the couples friends and family haven’t touched a drop of drink all day, but have listened carefully and followed all of the photographers instructions and are now standing immaculately, smiling angelically, as the wedding couple appear like models, every person delicately holding a sparkler that were all lit instantaneously and nothing went wrong at all…

Biiiiitch!
That is a sparkler fantasy of grand proportions!
In reality, a sparkler shot is 100 SPACIALLY UNAWARE DRUNK PEOPLE BRANDISHING STICKS OF FIRE!

I understand that I’m about to sound a bit like a sparkler-boner-killer, but an incredibly important aspect of working with sparklers is SAFETY! I want to make sure that no one ends up on fire, including me! As Monica says “RULES HELP CONTROL THE FUN!”[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][blockquote text=”I have a love/hate relationship with sparkler shots – mostly because it takes SO long to organise, however the pay off can be MONUMENTAL. ” show_quote_icon=”yes” text_color=”#1fb9c4″ background_color=”#ffffff” border_color=”#ffffff” quote_icon_color=”#0a0a0a”][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][image_with_text image=”30244″][/image_with_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]
DARKNESS
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]To get the maximum effect, sparkler shots need to be done at least 30 minutes after sunset so it’s dark outside. Obviously for winter weddings it’s pitch black from 4pm, but when you’re getting married on 21st June, the longest day of the year, this could mean sparklers aren’t happening until 10pm/11pm and your guests are more than slightly squiffy and no one wants to leave the dancefloor. So speak to your photographer to arrange between you something suitable for your big day. I shoot up until about an hour after your first dance, but I do offer additional hours as a add-on extra (ask me about this!)[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][image_with_text image=”30247″][/image_with_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]
BIG ONES
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]There’s no point ordering normal length sparklers that kiddies use on Bonfire Night – make sure the sparklers you are ordering are LOOOONG. You want them to stay lit for a decent amount of time so your photographer doesn’t have a heart attack when they realise everyone’s sparkler is dying before you have even lit your own.
You can find good length sparklers here https://www.sparklers.co.uk/products/100-wedding-send-off-sparklers – I’d go for the 14”, 16” or 18” (that’s what she said!!)[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][image_with_text image=”30249″][/image_with_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]
TIMESAVER
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]Most sparklers come in a packet of 3-5, so the best thing to do is to remove all of the packets and have the sparklers standing in a container ready for your guests to grab one or two each. You could ask your wedding co-ordinator from your venue to do this during the wedding breakfast. If you did it the day before there could be time for the sparklers to go damp or, even worse, accidentally ignite themselves, and you don’t want to be faffing around with de-packaging them on the morning of the wedding yourself.

IGNITION
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]This is probably my absolute TOP TIP when it comes to arranging successful sparkler shots – BRING LOADS OF LIGHTERS. Not many people still smoke these days, so you’re going to get nowhere by trying to light 100 guests sparklers from a handful of half empty lighters. You can find 10 packs of lighters from Pound World or £Stretcher or even Home & Bargain – for 100 guests try and pick up at least 5 of these 10-packs! It may seem like a bit of a waste of money as you might not even use them again, but hey, the same could be said about anything you buy for your wedding day! The point is if you want something to be done gloriously and have photographic memories that will last a lifetime, you have to do the correct amount of preparation. [/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][blockquote text=”And guuurl, 10-pack of lighters from £Stretcher will not break the bank and they will be the magic key to those “faaaaabulous” sparkler shots.” show_quote_icon=”yes” text_color=”#1fb9c4″ background_color=”#ffffff” border_color=”#ffffff” quote_icon_color=”#0a0a0a”][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column width=”1/6″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][image_with_text image=”30254″][/image_with_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/6″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][image_with_text image=”30250″][/image_with_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]
ANNOUNCEMENT
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]You don’t need looooads of people for a sparkler shot to look amazing, sometimes just the bridal party will do. However if you want all of your guests to be involved (there is no point doing it straight after your first dance while people want to boogie, nor is there any point doing it while your band are in the middle of a set, and definitely do NOT do it just as the evening food is being served – food always wins!) So find a moment in between all of that and get your Master of Ceremonies (or your band/DJ) to make an announcement over a microphone that sparklers will be happening just outside. As long as you head straight out there, people WILL follow.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][image_with_text image=”30253″][/image_with_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]
SAFETY
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]As I mentioned before, drunk people + fire = danger and could easily culminate in singed fringes, burn marks in suits & scorched tongues (all 3 have happened), so safety is key when arranging the sparkler shot of your dreams.
- Make sure your sparklers aren’t stored anywhere they can catch fire
- Don’t leave the packets of lighters in an ushers hot car
- Store the sparklers in a tin bucket so if they do catch fire they won’t burn anything around them
- Have a second bucket on hand filled with sand or water for all the used sparklers to be thrown into
- Don’t hold more than 2 sparklers together when lit
- Watch where you are holding the sparklers (many guests will be wearing LOTS of hairspray and hair burns very fast)
- Watch out for where other guests are holding THEIR sparklers!
- Don’t let children hold them unaccompanied (and when I say “children” that also includes the ushers and best man)
- Don’t grab the hot end of the sparkler once it’s gone out
- And, for the love of all that is holy, DON’T HOLD THEM IN BETWEEN YOUR TEETH OR PUT THEM OUT WITH YOUR MOUTH. I mean, it looks pretty funny, but you’ll regret it in the morning when you have no gums or tongue and a smile like the Joker.
[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][image_with_text image=”30279″][/image_with_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]
Now you have all the low down, go forth and work that sparkler extravaganza!

All of these sparkler shots are awesome. And can I just say how entertaining your commentary was? “By far, my favourite lines were, “Biiiiitch! That is a sparkler fantasy of grand proportions! In reality, a sparkler shot is 100 SPACIALLY UNAWARE DRUNK PEOPLE BRANDISHING STICKS OF FIRE!”
Ah thank you! I basically write these blogs for my own entertainment sometimes because I’m never sure if anyone actually reads them or just looks at the pretty pictures haha!
